Yorba Linda Slips Through the Cracks and Beats Out Edison in Solid Matchup (2024)

Yorba Linda – Nathan Shapell Memorial Stadium

Edison suffered a heartbreaking 22-21 loss to Yorba Linda on Friday night at Yorba Linda High, despite leading for most of the game. The Chargers, now 0-2, controlled the night through three quarters but were defeated by a last-second touchdown pass and a game-winning extra point.

Senior quarterback Savelio Niumata had an impressive performance, throwing for 171 yards and two touchdown passes. He connected with Senior wide receiver Jake Minter for a 13-yard score in the third quarter and hit Sophomore wide receiver Ayden Degiacomo with a 36-yard strike just before halftime. Edison’s Senior running back, Julius Gillick, opened the scoring with a 9-yard run early in the second quarter to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.

Edison entered the fourth quarter with a 21-7 advantage, but Yorba Linda’s late comeback, including a touchdown and 2-point conversion by Junior running back Vaughn Sharp, cut the lead to 21-15. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Chargers were flagged for several penalties in the final minutes, which helped keep Yorba Linda’s game-winning drive alive.

The Chargers’ defense held Yorba Linda’s Sophomore standout wide receiver Troy Roberts in check for most of the game, but with five seconds remaining, Roberts found space in the end zone for the game-tying touchdown, followed by the deciding extra point.

After back-to-back narrow losses, Edison will look to bounce back next week as they face Lakewood, aiming to turn their season around.
