Corona del Mar Falls Short to Palos Verdes (2024)
Palos Verdes Estates – Palos Verdes Stadium
Corona del Mar suffered its first loss of the season in a thrilling 21-17 defeat against Palos Verdes on Friday afternoon. Despite a strong start and a dominant lead in the second half, the Sea Kings (2-1) couldn’t hold off a late rally from their rivals.
Corona del Mar took an early 10-0 lead, due to a fourth-down touchdown pass from Senior quarterback Max Nashed to Senior tight end Zach Giuliano and a 25-yard field goal by Junior kicker Joseph DiBello. The Sea Kings’ defense was also dialed in, forcing multiple three-and-outs throughout the game.
Offensively, Nashed looked in control, leading an 80-yard drive to open the second half, which he finished off with an 18-yard screen pass to Senior running back Wyatt Lucas to give Corona del Mar a 17-7 advantage.
However, Corona del Mar’s momentum gave out as Palos Verdes fought back. The defense struggled to contain Sophomore quarterback Ryan Rakowski, whose ability to scramble and make key plays allowed Palos Verdes to find success.
Corona del Mar had opportunities to put the game out of reach but couldn’t capitalize, and Palos Verdes’ clutch fourth-down conversions and big plays in the final quarter turned the tide. A pair of touchdown passes to Senior wide receiver Cole Norman, including the game-winner with just over five minutes remaining, sealed the game for Palos Verdes.
Corona del Mar made a final push, driving deep into Palos Verdes territory, but a crucial interception by Senior defensive back Jon Sarmiento ended any hopes of a comeback.
Corona del Mar will look to regroup as they prepare for their next matchup at home against San Clemente.
