Hawaii’s Mililani Edges Out Los Alamitos (2024)
Los Alamitos – Los Alamitos Stadium
Los Alamitos put up a strong fight at home but couldn’t hold off Mililani, the top-ranked team from Hawaii, in a 27-24 loss Friday night.
The Griffins got off to a hot start, with Tron Baker nearly breaking free on a long run before Jerod Terry punched in a short touchdown from the jumbo formation, giving Los Alamitos an early lead. Their defense stepped up soon after, with Jackson Raguse making key stops and causing a fumble to keep the momentum on their side.
Despite Los Alamitos’ solid start, Mililani responded with a strong offensive push, tying the game 7-7 in the first quarter. A field goal from Benji Gamarnik gave the Griffins a 10-7 lead, but Mililani’s Senior quarterback Kini McMillian hit a receiver in the corner of the end zone to take the advantage.
Los Alamitos kept fighting, with Baker making a huge play to wrestle the ball away from a potential pick six. That set up a scoring drive, and the Griffins regained the lead 17-14, heading into the third quarter.
However, Mililani answered back with an enormous run, breaking several tackles on a 90-yard wildcat play to go up 20-17. The back-and-forth continued when Los Alamitos dialed up a hook-and-ladder play, setting up another touchdown to retake the lead.
With the game on the line in the final moments, McMillian scrambled into the end zone, sealing the 27-24 win. It was a heartbreaking loss for Los Alamitos, who came close but couldn’t hold off their strong opponents in the end.
