El Modena Hands Newport Harbor Another Loss, 55-35 (2024)

Newport Harbor’s search for their first win of the season continues after a tough 55-35 defeat against El Modena Friday night at Newport Harbor High.

The Sailors (0-3) faced a challenge right from the start, as El Modena’s Senior quarterback Xzavior Guess delivered a statement performance. Guess threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 214 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, overwhelming Newport Harbor’s defense throughout the game.

Through those early setbacks, Newport Harbor showed glimpses of offensive strength. After falling behind 21-7 in the first quarter, Senior quarterback Bode Stefano connected with Senior wide receiver Cade Fegel for a 47-yard touchdown. Fegel, who was a focal point for the Sailors, later added a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 24-14 in the second quarter.

Newport Harbor struggled to contain Guess, who consistently found ways to extend plays. The Sailors’ defense had no answer for his mobility and precise passing. He added two long rushing touchdowns in the first quarter alone, setting the tone for a high-scoring game.

On offense, Stefano showed his potential, but a big interception on the first play of the game set the Sailors back. The turnover quickly led to an El Modena touchdown, giving the Vanguards early momentum.

Newport Harbor’s new head coach, Matt Burns, is still searching for his first win, but the team did have some notable moments. Along with Fegel’s standout plays, the Sailors added a few late touchdowns to keep the scoreboard alive, but they were never able to close the gap created by El Modena’s explosive offense.

The Sailors will look to find their victory when they travel to face Cajon next week.
