Marina Rolls Past Pacifica to Stay Undefeated (2024)

Westminster – Westminster High School Football Field

The talk of Marina High’s football team is quickly spreading throughout Orange County, and for a good reason. With the offseason addition of renowned defensive coordinator Eric Johnson from Mater Dei, the Vikings have truly elevated their game. That was proven on Thursday night as they rolled over a 31-7 victory against Pacifica in a non-league matchup at Westminster High.

Marina Senior quarterback Garrett Hunnicutt was electric, passing for a season-high 272 yards and two touchdowns. His top target, Senior wide receiver Shane Cassidy, had a monster night with four catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a thrilling 93-yard score. Cassidy also contributed on defense, intercepting a pass to help the Vikings’ defense restrain Pacifica in the second half.

“I hope Orange County gives us some respect for what we’ve done so far but we’re not done yet,” Hunnicutt stated. “We’ve been working hard and the start is everything we wanted. We’re doing good. We just got to keep working hard and not get all caught up in our head.”‘

Marina’s defense, led by Johnson’s keen play-calling, forced three turnovers and allowed just 26 points in their first four games. Key performances came from Senior safety Aidan Hunt and Senior and Junior linebackers Jake Russell and Brayden O’Rourke, while Senior defensive lineman Duk Caldwell’s fumble recovery set up another touchdown.

The Vikings improve to 4-0 and now set their sights on Esperanza (2-0) next week. With momentum and confidence on their side, Marina is proving they’re a team to watch this season.
