Corona del Mar Dominates Trabuco Hills with Offensive Explosion, 51-38 (2024)

Newport Beach – Davidson Field

Corona del Mar Senior running back Wyatt Lucas had a night to remember in the Sea Kings’ 51-38 victory over Trabuco Hills on Friday at Newport Harbor High. Lucas set a new school record, rushing for 352 yards and scoring four touchdowns, surpassing the previous record of 304 yards set by Erik Fisher in 2011.

Lucas, who buys steak dinners for his offensive line after every 100-yard game, joked, “I think I owe them three steak dinners. That will hurt the pockets, but it’s worth it.” He also celebrated surpassing his father’s rushing records at the school, adding a personal touch to his outstanding performance.

Corona del Mar coach Kevin Hettig praised both Lucas and the offensive line, which featured Aziz Altuwaijri, Damian Zeno-Herrera, Landon Rucker, Anthony Hastings, and Judah Snow. “…if we are blocking it cleanly, he (Wyatt) is going to make some big plays. Up front, we were really good tonight,” said Hettig.

The Sea Kings racked up 524 total yards, with 423 coming in the first half alone. Senior quarterback Max Nashed threw for three touchdowns, all to Junior receiver Dorsett Stecker, who had 10 receptions for 70 yards.

Despite an early touchdown by Trabuco Hills, the Sea Kings quickly took control, with Lucas scoring twice in the second quarter to build a 28-10 lead. Trabuco Hills made attempts to rally, but Corona del Mar’s defense, led by Senior linebacker Breck Clemmer’s four sacks and a safety, held strong.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Corona del Mar (3-2), who now look ahead to their Bravo League opener against San Juan Hills. “Tonight was a big night for us,” said Hettig. “We are ready for the Bravo League and are excited to get into it.”
