Marina shuts out Fullerton 28-0 and looks forward to showdown against Kennedy (2024)

The Marina football team continued its undefeated season with a 28-0 win over Fullerton on Thursday at Westminster High School.

In winning its eighth straight game, the Vikings have also clinched one of the three automatic playoff qualifiers from the Lambda, as they can’t finish any lower than third place, even if they lose out the rest of the way.

After both teams’ offensive drives were unsuccessful, the Vikings found success as Garrett Hunnicutt found Shane Cassisy for a 20-yard touchdown in the endzone to put the hosts on top. Despite having a stout run game, the Indians couldn’t muster up a lot of big plays or first downs.

Despite controlling the momentum for most of the game, Marina’s offense didn’t make the big plays and often times turned the ball over. The Vikings’ next score didn’t come until halfway through the second quarter, as Hunnicutt found Jake Russell for a short pass score to make the lead 14-0, which eventually became the halftime score.

Marina opened up the second half in a big way, as Shayden Sorochman went untouched for a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown, boosting the lead to 21-0.

On the next offensive drive, the Vikings worked their down the field, which eventually saw Hunnicutt find Cassidy for the duo’s second touchdown. The rest of the way, the Vikings’ defense kept Fullerton off the court, despite the opposition threatening to score late in the game.

Despite winning and posting a shutout, Marina turned the ball over three times, via fumble. Vikings coach Charlie TeGantvoort said he loves how his team plays with fire, but also said that the fire “doesn’t burn everything.

The Vikings (8-0, 3-0) return to action on Thursday when they play Kennedy at Western High School at 7 p.m. The Fighting Irish lost to Beckman 20-14 in overtime on the same night Marina won.
