Marina Powers Past Beckman in CIF-SS Playoff Opener (2024)

Huntington Beach – Marina High School Gym

For the third straight year, the Marina girls volleyball team won its playoff opener, as it swept Beckman 25-23, 25-15, 25-18 on Wednesday at Marina High School in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

The Vikings, which lost to the Patriots in the second round of the playoffs last year, advance to the second round where they will face Beaumont at home on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Cougars swept Citrus Valley in their first round match.

Marina and Beckman had already met in the regular season with the Vikings winning in four sets at Beckman on August 29. The playoff match almost mirrored the match in the regular season.

The two teams were neck-and-neck early on in the first set, as the Patriots used a 3-0 run to break a 14-14 tie to lead 17-14. But a 4-0 run from the Vikings after being down 18-14 tied the set up at 18-18.

Four (4) minute highlights and podcast from the game, above.

Marina started to find some breathing room as it led 23-20 and eventually 24-21, but two straight hitting errors put Beckman within one at 24-23, prompting a timeout from the home team. But Korynn Mayo, who has been the offensive catalyst for this team most of the season, put away the set-clinching kill to give the Vikings the opener 25-23.

The second set saw Marina jump out to an early 9-4 with some tough serves and some well-timed swings. The Vikings were never in any danger as they took the second set 25-15.

With their backs against the wall, the Patriots reeled off the first three points of the set, only to see the Vikings turn the tide and lead 12-8 in the third set. Despite Beckman’s best efforts to stay within striking distance, Marina’s lead grew to as many as nine and didn’t any lower than six, as Addison Brown clinched the match with a kill from the right side.

The Vikings (17-13), who finished fourth in the Sunset League, are back in action in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday when they host Beaumont. The Cougars (14-4) finished second in the Citrus Belt League behind Redlands.
