Edison Shuts Out North Torrance 24-0 in CIF-SS Playoff Opener (2024)
Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field
Edison shut down North Torrance’s offense to secure a 24-0 victory in the CIF-SS Division 3 opening round on Thursday at Huntington Beach High. The Chargers (7-4), ranked No. 11 in Orange County, held the Saxons, who had been averaging 31 points per game, scoreless.
Edison’s defense was relentless, limiting North Torrance quarterback Boogie Anetema to just 34 passing yards in the first half. Anetema ended with 176 yards, but most came when Edison had a firm lead. The Saxons (8-2) didn’t reach the Chargers’ 35-yard line until the game was nearly over.
“Our defensive (coaching staff) is very good,” said Edison coach Jeff Grady. “The kids executed for the most part. That’s the case every week.”
Offensively, Edison leaned on sophomore Sam Edmisten, who stepped up to fill in for an injured and limited Julius Gillick. Edmisten rushed for 46 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown to open the scoring, and had seven receptions for 63 yards.
“I’ve known he can do it, but I know the world didn’t know he could do it,” Edison quarterback Sam Thompson said of Edmisten. “So, that was awesome to see… he plays bigger than his size.”
Edison now heads to the quarterfinals to face the winner of Friday’s Cathedral/Bonita game. If Cathedral wins, Edison will play at home. If Bonita succeeds, they’ll travel to La Verne.
