Edison Posts Second Straight Shutout the Playoffs against Previously-Undefeated Bonita (2024)

La Verne – Glenn Davis Stadium

The Edison football shut out its second straight opponent in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs, defeating Bonita 24-0 on Friday at Glenn Davis Stadium at Bonita High School.

The Chargers (8-4) advance to the semifinals where they will play at Vista Murrieta. The Broncos, just like the Chargers, posted a shutout in the quarterfinals, beating Cajon 21-0.

The big concern for Edison, however, could be the health status of Julius Gillick, who suffered a right leg injury late in the second quarter after a run play.

Edison got on the board with a 23-yard field goal from Nico Bammer on the first drive of the game to lead 3-0. The Chargers’ run attack paved the way for the most part on the opening drive and throughout most of the game.

After the Bearcats went three and out, Edison went to work to drive down the field. Eventually, Gillick scored on a touchdown run out of the wildcat format to bring their lead to 10-0. The Chargers got the ball before the quarter ended as they started in Bonita territory.

Edison scored a touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Sam Thomson to Jake Minter as Thomson looked as if he was going to scramble, but found his receiver for the score. 17-0 eventually became the halftime score.

After a promising kickoff return to start the third quarter for Bonita which saw it start in Edison territory, it turned it over on downs. Edison made the Bearcats pay, as its drive featured amazing throws from Thomson and was eventually capped off by a throw to Shea Summers for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

The Bearcats’ next drive saw them make their only trip into the redzone, as they settled in and found the open receivers on passing routes. They got all the way down to the Chargers’ 13-yard line, but was picked off on fourth down by Jordan Pelaez.

Eventually, the Chargers controlled the time of possession and clock and eventually completed their second straight shutout of the postseason. Through eight quarters, Edison has been methodical in terms of its gameplay, but plays a talented Vista Murrieta team, which despite finishing fourth in the Big West League, stunned No.2 seed Villa Park in the first round 23-20 and beat No.11 seed Cajon 21-0 on the road.
