Los Alamitos Rolls Past Newport Harbor to Remain Undefeated in Sunset League (2025)

Los Alamitos – The Los Alamitos boys basketball team proved why it was one of the top teams in Orange County and favored to win the Sunset League, as it beat Newport Harbor 69-57 on Saturday at Los Alamitos High School.

Early on, the Sailors fell into an early hole, trailing 4-0, but responded with a 6-0 run to lead 6-4. The lead was short-lived, as the Griffins responded with an 8-0 run to go up 12-6.

From there, Los Alamitos used its swarming defense to pressure Newport Harbor into turnovers, which eventually turned into points for the home team. The Griffins continued their roll, building a 19-point lead and eventually leading 37-20 at halftime.

Despite being down by a hefty amount, Newport Harbor showed no quit, as players such as Jack Berry and Owen Saukkola were the catalysts. Both players led the Sailors with 15 points each.

Newport Harbor continued to show its fight in the fourth quarter, despite being down by more than 20 points. But it was too little too late, as Los Alamitos remains undefeated in league.

Los Alamitos’ strong season continues, as in all of their games played in this season, they scored 60 or more points. Some of the Griffins’ returning standouts from last year’s team who won the Surf League include Trent Minter, Samori Guyness, Wesley Trevino and two-time Surf League MVP Liam Grey.
