Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor Battle Turns into an Overtime Thriller (2025)
Newport Beach – Sailors Gym
In a game that featured high-intensity moments and a dramatic finish, Los Alamitos edged out Newport Harbor 82-78 in a double-overtime battle on Wednesday night. The matchup was a test of endurance and execution, as both teams had stretches of dominance but couldn’t pull away until the final moments.
Newport Harbor started the game strong, taking a 21-18 lead after the first quarter behind their well-balanced offensive attack. However, Los Alamitos responded with a massive second-quarter effort, outscoring Newport Harbor 25-15 to grab a halftime lead. Trent Minter was a key catalyst for Los Alamitos, putting up a game-high 23 points while controlling the tempo and making plays down the stretch.
After the break, both teams traded baskets in a tight third quarter, with Los Alamitos narrowly maintaining their edge. Newport Harbor had a strong fourth quarter, putting up 21 points to force overtime behind the efforts of Gavin Guy, who led the Sailors with 19 points while shooting an impressive 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Jack Berry and Owen Saukkola also played crucial roles, each contributing 18 points and hitting key shots in crunch time.
The overtime period saw both teams struggle to create separation, with each side putting up just eight points. Los Alamitos relied heavily on Minter, Samori Guyness, and Matt Lau, who combined for a significant portion of the team’s scoring and defensive pressure. Los Alamitos finally found the momentum they needed, outscoring Newport Harbor 12-8 to secure the win.
In addition to Minter’s standout performance, Guyness was a force with 22 points, and Lau added 15, making crucial plays when it mattered most. Newport Harbor put up a fight, with Dean Davis contributing eight points and Nash McKown adding a few more, but in the end, Los Alamitos’ ability to execute overtime proved to be the difference.
The game was a showcase of grit from both squads, but Los Alamitos’ composure and clutch play in the final minutes allowed them to escape with the 82-78 win. Newport Harbor will look to regroup after the tough loss, while Los Alamitos will hope to build on this momentum heading into their next matchup.
