AJ Perez Throws Four Touchdowns in 35-6 Victory Over Wilson Long Beach (2021)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field

Huntington Beach senior quarterback AJ Perez led his team to a 35-0 first-half lead and the defense continued its strong play. Perez threw four touchdowns in route to a 35-6 win over Long Beach Wilson on Friday at Sheue Field.

“I thought we came out ready to play,” Huntington Beach head coach Brett Brown said. “We had great energy and the kids were ready to play. It’s nice to have some big plays to start. Our kids were locked in and played well on both sides of the ball.”

It was all Oilers in the first half. Huntington Beach quarterback AJ Perez capped a 7-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Castro. After the defense recovered a fumble, Perez connected with Caleb Kelly for a 23-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

“We prepared a lot all week long for this,” Perez said. “The receivers had a great game.Game plan was to give it to the guys that can run and make great catches.”

Tyler Moses made a 46-yard reception but fumbled at the 2-yard line. Wilson went three-and-out and got the punt blocked. The Oilers fell on the ball and on the next play senior running back Ej Riederich punched it in from two yards out to give HB a 21-0 lead with 8:57 left in the second quarter.

After a sack by Jeremy Carpenter and Joe Carroll, the Bruins were forced to punt. On the ensuing drive, Perez hit Hideo Ray in the middle of the field for a 19-yard touchdown. Ray finished five receptions for 149 yards.

Perez threw his fourth touchdown of the first half when he hit Kelly in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown. The Oilers took a 35-0 lead into halftime.

The Oilers almost had back-to-back shutouts but Wilsons’ quarterback Xander McLaurin scored on a 67-yard run with 1:47 left in the game.

“They played hard nosed and our DB’s played really well,” Brown said on his defense. “They were locked in and executed well.”

Next up for the Oilers is a road non-conference game against El Toro on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
