Corona del Mar Halts Losing Streak Against Tesoro & Win First Bravo League game (2024)

The Corona del Mar football team won its first-ever Bravo League game, defeating Tesoro 44-14 on Friday at Davidson Field.

From the opening snap, the Sea Kings were locked in, as they forced a three and out against the Titans and eventually took over on their own 19. After a big 79-yard gain on a run from Wyatt Lukas, Brady Annett found Dorsett Stecker for the score to put his team up 7-0.

Tesoro, which was playing without starting quarterback Cash O’Byrne after he had shoulder surgery last week, started Vaughn Steinert, who has a win under his belt against Cypress in week 4. Against the Sea Kings, Steinert and the Titans struggled to move the ball in the first quarter.

After a Corona del Mar field goal, Tesoro found its way on the scoreboard, as Steinert found Campbell Schamel for a 12-yard touchdown catch in the endzone to make the score 17-7.

After the Sea Kings fumbled in the red zone, the Titans recovered it at the one yard line instead of it being in the endzone for a touchback. Eventually, Tesoro briefly went three and out, and eventually, Annett found Garrett James for a 5-yard TD after the punt didn’t even get past the Titans’ 20-yard line.

The second half belonged to the Sea Kings, as they played mistake-free football the rest of the way and continued to pressure Steinert defensively. Some standouts from the offensive line included Judah Snow, Landon Rucker, Aziz Altuwaijri and Anthony Hastings, as they helped Annett win his first game when starting and finishing as the QB.

Annett went 17 of 29 for 220 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and 74 rushing yards.

The Sea Kings (4-5, 1-3) close out the regular season on Friday against Yorba Linda at 7 p.m. A win for the Sea Kings could make a good case for them to be an at-large team for the CIF-SS playoffs, as the Mustangs (8-1, 3-1) most recently beat Newport Harbor 42-17 to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.
