Corona del Mar Keeps Rolling, Sinks Edison in Straight Sets Battle (2025)

Newport Beach – Sea Kings Gymnasium

Corona del Mar came out on top with a 3-0 sweep of Edison on Friday night, improving their momentum in Sunset League play. The Sea Kings edged out the Chargers with set scores of 26-24, 25-17, 25-18, holding off a few surges from the gritty Edison squad.

From the opening serve, the match had a playoff-like rhythm. Set one was especially intense, with both teams trading points deep into the frame. But when it mattered most, CdM’s experience and clutch execution proved decisive.

Junior Daniel Booker led the offensive front with a team-high .417 hitting percentage, while Hunter Hannemann delivered in all phases, finishing with 2.5 blocks, 3 digs, 9 kills, and a strong .360 hitting percentage. Hannemann, who’s become one of CdM’s most reliable finishers, made his presence felt at the net throughout all three sets.

Benjamin Brown, one of CdM’s most powerful assets, continued his impactful play, notching 3 aces, 12 digs, and 12 kills. His steady serve receive and defensive coverage mixed with his net presence helped stabilize the Sea Kings during Edison’s pushes.

Drake Foley, now fully adjusted to his role as setter, chipped in a block and ace, while also contributing to a well-rounded assist total of 36 for the team.

Despite the sweep, Edison showed plenty of fight. Players like Nathan Jackson with 14 digs, and Nathan King with 9, worked tirelessly in the back row. Offensively, Nathan King also helped lead the team with 11 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, while Connor McNally posted 12 kills with a few digs.

Edison’s serve-receive faltered at times, allowing CdM to take advantage with aggressive serving runs and consistent side-out efficiency, especially in sets two and three where CdM posted hitting percentages of .231 and .346 respectively.

For CdM, the win was a full-team performance rooted in depth and discipline. They finished with a .250 team hitting percentage, 38 digs, and 5 total blocks. While Edison actually topped them in assists (37 to 36), the Sea Kings capitalized on fewer errors (22 to 39) and sharper execution when it mattered.

As the regular season heats up, this performance gives CdM another burst of confidence as they continue to battle through a competitive Sunset League slate, while Edison continues to seek victory from these important upcoming league matches.
