Corona del Mar Takes Big Win Over Rivals Newport Harbor, 61-41 (2025)

Newport Beach – Sea Kings Gym

It was “The Battle of the Bay” rematch, this time at a packed CDM gym.

The Sea Kings put together a strong all-around performance Tuesday night, cruising past Newport Harbor with a statement 61-41 win. While Newport Harbor led after the first quarter (16-15), the Sea Kings used a balanced offensive attack and an aggressive defense to take control in the second quarter with a lockdown defensive effort, keeping Newport Harbor to just nine points while putting up 17 of their own. By halftime, CdM had established an eight-point cushion and never looked back.

Leading the charge for the Sea Kings was Oliver Nakra, who put up an impressive 22 points, hitting four three-pointers and adding three rebounds. Luke Mirhashemi was another key factor, scoring 16 points while collecting three rebounds and three assists. Big man Jackson Harlan provided a solid contribution with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, playing a crucial role in Corona del Mar’s offensive flow. Maxwell Scott added 11 points and five assists, helping to facilitate the attack and keep Newport Harbor’s defense on its heels.

Newport Harbor struggled to generate consistent offense after the first quarter. Dean Davis led the way with 11 points (all in the first quarter), but the Sailors couldn’t find their rhythm against CdM’s defensive pressure. Jack Berry contributed six points and three rebounds, while Owen Saukkola added eight points and two rebounds. However, Newport Harbor’s shooting woes and turnovers proved costly as the Sea Kings extended their lead in the second half.

CdM took complete control in the third quarter, outscoring Newport Harbor 19-8, which secured the outcome. Despite a lower-scoring fourth quarter, Corona del Mar’s defense remained effective, limiting Newport Harbor to just eight points again and coasting to a 20-point victory.

With this win, the Sea Kings lock up the coveted fourth place finish in the Sunset League. That means automatic bid and playoff for Corona del Mar. Meanwhile, Newport Harbor will have to wait, see and hope for an at-large playoff bid. We’ll know more in the coming days if they get a post-season chance.
