Corona Del Mar Wins Sunset League Opener Against Fountain Valley

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field

Huntington Beach – The Corona Del Mar football team opened Sunset League play in convincing fashion, defeating Fountain Valley 42-7 on Thursday at Cap Sheue Field.

The Sea Kings saw the return of UC Davis-bound quarterback David, who missed the last three games with a high ankle sprain. Despite splitting time with junior Kaleb Annett, Rasor finished 7 of 13 for 91 yards and two passing touchdowns.
“Tonight, it was a good time to get back on to the field, be with my teammates, move the ball down the field, get the feel back under my feet and just got rolling, so it was a good time,” Rasor said.

Rasor helped set the tone in a big way on the game’s opening drive, as he led CdM to its first touchdown, as found Colin Pene off an 8-yard screen pass. The touchdown marked the first he threw since week one against Los Gatos.
The Sea Kings found other ways, to score touchdowns not just on offense, as they forced the Barons to go three and out, in doing so, Oliver Ayala showed off his speed by taking it to the house for a punt return touchdown. Despite recovering an onside kick and having the offense back on the field, CdM punted.

While it looked like Fountain Valley was about to have its turn to try and get its offense going, on second down, Brady Gadol forced a fumble for the Sea Kings, who eventually recovered. CdM eventually turned the turnover into points, as Annett found Cooper Hoch for a 15-yard touchdown.

The Sea Kings added one more touchdown before the first quarter ended, as Rasor rolled out and found Hoch in the endzone for a 35-yard score to end a long first quarter. After that touchdown, Rasor took it easy, as Annett took over for the most part.

“He was a stud, he stepped up, he played well, he led us to two wins and balled out tonight,” Rasor said about Annett.

The Barons didn’t get their a first down until their first drive of the second quarter, as it looked like they were going to punt on fourth down, but ran a fake punt, as Nolan Olivares kept it and ran for the first down. Despite that, the Barons came up short on another fourth down attempt.

After back-to-back-to-back punts, the Sea Kings eventually found a drive that saw the score a touchdown, as Annett found Russell Weir who made a grabbing catch and kept at least one foot inbounds.
“We took an initiative to bring the team together, stop playing as individuals, really unify the team and we just got it rolling,” Weir said.

The next CdM drive came after a blocked punt, as it took over at midfield, as Annett delivered three quick strikes for 15+ yard gains. Annett, on the fifth play of the drive, found Hoch, who scored his third touchdown of the night, as well as Annett scoring his third passing touchdown.

The Barons didn’t get on the board until early in the fourth quarter when Abdel Habihed rumbled on in for a 4-yard touchdown. But at the point, the game had already been decided.
The Sea Kings (5-1, 1-0) have a big Sunset League showdown against Los Alamitos next Thursday at Davidson field at 7 p.m. For Fountain Valley (4-2, 0-1), it returns to action next Friday when it plays Huntington Beach at Cap Sheue Field at 7 p.m.
