Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field
Corona Del Mar bounced back from a loss with a dominating 50-7 win over Huntington Beach on Friday night at Cap Sheue Field.
Senior wide receiver Cooper Hoch caught three first-half touchdowns and Russell Weir added two touchdown receptions to help the Sea Kings improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in Sunset League play.
“The credit has to go to our offensive line, CDM head coach Dan OShea said. “They never get enough credit. And the defense as a whole created four turnovers. It’s what you need in October and heading into November against quality team. You have to win the turnover battle.”
The Sea Kings jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on David Rasor’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Hoch.
Rasor and Hoch connected again, this time on a 14-yard touchdown to give CDM a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Huntington Beach quarterback Daunte Bell was intercepted by Michael Lynch. The Sea Kings couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and they turned the ball over on downs after coming up short on 4th and 2.
Lynch made a one-handed interception on the next drive and Hoch hauled in his third touchdown of the first half. CDM took a 21-0 lead with 2:22 left in the second quarter.
CDM backup quarterback Kaleb Annett came into the game in the second quarter and threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Russell Weir. The 2-point conversion was good and the Sea Kings took a 29-0 lead into halftime.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, Annett capped a 7-play, 79-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Colin Pene for a 36-0 lead. Huntington Beach got on the board when running back Tyler Young went up the middle for a 63-yard touchdown run.
In the fourth quarter, Annett connected with Weir once again for a touchdown to give CDM a 43-7 lead with 10:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. CDM backup running back Wyatt Lucas added a touchdown to put the away.
