Corona del Mar Finishes Non-Confrence Schedue Undefeated With Win Against San Juan Hills

San Juan Capistrano – Stallion Stadium

The Corona del Mar Sea Kings dominated San Juan Hills in a 45-27 victory on Friday.

The entire cast made an appearance in the non-conference finale of the Sea Kings 2021 Season. Five different players scored touchdowns for CdM, in what was a relatively comfortable win given their 7-3 nail biter last week at San Clemente.

CdM junior QB David Rasor pulled the rabbit out of the hat when he ran to the outside for a 51-yard rushing TD midway through the first quarter. After a three-and-out from SJH, Rasor would extend the lead with a 10-yard TD pass to junior wide receiver Cooper Hoch.

In the second quarter, SHJ freshman QB Michael “Butter” Tollefson responded to a CdM field goal with a 32-yard bomb to his senior receiver Braden Pegan, putting the Stallions on the board, 17-7. The next three drives were not so hot for CdM; interception, missed field goal, and another interception off of an end-of-quarter heave.

CdM’s decision to defer the opening kickoff would pay dividends in the third quarter, as junior running back Evan Sanders would come out of the locker room with 6 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown in the Sea Kings’ first drive of the second half. Sanders has been battling a leg injury all season and was finally able to record his first start since being named to the Second Team All-Sunset League last season.

The fourth quarter was filled with six touchdowns between the two teams— split 3 each. Sophomore WR Russell Weir would collect his first reception and touchdown of the year, and Hoch would add his second of the night. To conclude scoring for the Sea Kings, sophomore QB Kaleb Annett threw a 5-yard TD pass to senior tight end Scott Truninger.

The Sea Kings improved to 5-0 behind 379 combined yards and 4 total TDs from Rasor, as well as 143 rushing yards and a touchdown from Evan Sanders.

After CdM’s bye week, they will begin conference play against Los Alamitos on October 1st — a matchup that is arguably the most highly anticipated in not only the Sunset League, but all of Orange County.
