Edison Hands Newport Harbor their First League Loss in a 9-8 Dogfight (2025)
Huntington Beach – Freedom Field (EHS)
In a three-game series finale at Freedom Field, Newport Harbor came up just short in a 9-8 loss to Edison in a Sunset League showdown that featured explosive second innings, lead changes, and relentless fight from both squads. The Sailors jumped ahead early in the top of the second as Elijah Haseth led off with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch. Shortly after, Cameron Hatfield doubled and also scored on a wild pitch to give Newport a 2-0 lead. But, the Chargers answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning, exploding for six runs—Cody Kruis, Grady Fischer, Joaquin Centeno, Hunter Cato, Jordan Alvarez, and Mason Gerhardt all crossed the plate in a frame that shifted momentum toward Edison.
Newport didn’t fold. Adam Martin drove in Noah Whittaker in the fourth inning with a single, and Wyatt Gahm followed with a two-run single to bring home Martin and Ryan Williams, pulling the Sailors within a run.
In the sixth, Gahm doubled to score Martin and Guy, with Gahm then after scoring himself, bringing back the Newport lead to 8-6. But, Edison responded again in the bottom half when Centeno came around to score by a single from Gerhardt. Next play, Cato scored on a ground out by Alvarez, tying the game 8-8. Finally, in the bottom of the seventh, Kruis runs it in to seal the game, 9-8.
Edison capitalized on a scoreless Newport seventh inning, capping them out by one in the end. Despite out-hitting the Chargers 11-7 and getting multi-hit efforts from Guy, Gahm, Haseth, and Hatfield, the Sailors couldn’t quite overcome Edison’s opportunistic offense and defensive execution. It was a back-and-forth, playoff-style battle that displayed the true talent and grit of both teams—and sets the stage for a fierce second half of Sunset League play.

For Edison, Mason Gerhardt and Gavin Johnson both had two hits and two RBIs apiece, while Jordan Alvarez also drove in two runs. Cody Kruis collected two hits and scored twice. The Chargers made the most of their hits by capitalizing on walks, hit-by-pitches, and a pair of costly Newport errors.

What’s next
Newport Harbor will look to bounce back and clean up the defensive side as they continue Sunset League play this week against Los Alamitos. With the loss, the Sailors fall to 5-1 in league action but remain a top contender in the race.
Edison, moving to 2-4 in league, earns a key win at home and will look to build off this momentum heading into a series with Fountain Valley. The Chargers showed grit and consistent hitting—two traits they’ll need as the schedule intensifies.
