Edison Charges Through La Serna in a 32-21 Victory (2024)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field

Edison High delivered a dominant early performance in their 32-21 win over La Serna in a non-league matchup Friday at Huntington Beach High School. The Chargers rose to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter, powered by Senior running back Julius Gillick, who scored three early touchdowns, and caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sophomore backup quarterback Sam Thompson.

Thompson stepped in for injured Senior starter Savelio Niumata and played confidently. “I didn’t know for sure of his status,” Thompson said, “but I knew I had to be ready.” He completed 12 of 19 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, while Gillick added 155 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Edison’s defense also made its presence felt with a safety by Senior Jerimiah Ross, and Thompson connected with Senior receiver Jake Minter on a 27-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 29-0.

Despite the early dominance, Edison struggled in the second half. La Serna, the defending CIF Division 2AA and SS Division 4 champions, fought back with two late touchdowns, but the Chargers’ defense held strong to prevent a full comeback.

“It started out well,” said Edison coach Jeff Grady. “They were defending CIF and State champions for a reason. They were tough.”

The Chargers added a 32-yard field goal from Senior kicker Nico Bammer in the fourth quarter, securing their third win of the season. Grady admitted the finish wasn’t ideal, saying, “I like finishing games. I don’t feel like we finished the game the way we wanted.”

With a 3-2 record, Edison looks ahead to next week’s non-league game against Helix, where Niumata is expected to return. “I’m very optimistic,” Grady said.
