Edison Claims The Bell For The 17th Straight Time Over Fountain Valley (2021)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field

Costa Mesa – The Edison Chargers High School football team made it 17 wins in a row over Fountain Valley in the Battle of the Bell rivalry game, as it won 51-0 on Friday at Orange Coast College.

Troy Fletcher, who was named MVP courtesy of American Rivalry, had 100 scrimmage yards, one rushing touchdown and a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown for Edison. Tyler Gioia had 143 passing yards for the Chargers.

Edison got great field position after Ashton Hurley returned the kickoff for 62 yards to the Fountain Valley 21. On the next play, Gioia found Nico Brown to give their team a 7-0 lead.

After Fletcher’s 2-yard rushing touchdown, the Edison defense began to shine, as Cody Grbic picked off Owen Tomko and returned it to the Fountain Valley 39. Two plays later, Gioia found Brown again for a 19-yard touchdown, putting the Chargers up 21-0.

Grbic finished the night with two interceptions.

On the next drive for the Barons, Carter Hogue picked off Tomko to set up another drive for Edison. On 4th and 8, Gioia found Tyler Hampton who made an amazing grab while staying inbound for a 25-yard touchdown to put the Chargers up 27-0.

From there, Edison’s stingy defense prevented Fountain Valley from making big plays offensively, as most of the Barons’ drives ended in them punting the ball.
In addition to Hogue’s interception, he finished with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Tucker Tripp added a 15-receiving touchdown from Gioia in the third quarter.

The Chargers’ win helped them in a great position in the Sunset League, as they are 3-1 going into the final week of the regular season. Their next game is Friday at Huntington Beach at 7 p.m., which if they win, they will finish all alone in second place.

Fountain Valley closes out the season against Corona Del Mar at Davidson Field on Friday at 7 p.m.
