Servite Is Too Much for Edison on Opening Night (2021)

Santa Ana – Santa Ana Stadium

Edison’s original opponent, Venice (Los Angeles) had to cancel their scheduled game with the Chargers (Covid-19 protocol). Servite’s original opponent, Bishop Amat, was also forced to cancel their game vs. the Friars. Servite’s Coach Troy Thomas and Edison’s Coach Jeff Grady quickly put a game together keeping each school on track for a full 10-game season. The Edison Chargers probably got more than they bargained for as they were outmatched playing a top Trinity League school.

The combination of explosive offense and a rampart defense was the perfect recipe for success in Servite’s 54-14 victory against Edison on Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
The dynamic Servite offense applied pressure from the opening kick against their Sunset League opponents. Servite running back Houston Thomas opened the scoring after an eight-yard touchdown run with 8:02 left in the first.

Thomas was only giving us a glimpse of the stellar performance he went on to display. He quickly followed up with a 46-yard run into the end zone in the following Friar possession, giving them a 13-0 lead with 5:23 left in the first. He would finish the game with 17 carries, 185 yards and four touchdowns.

The Chargers offense scored only once in the first half, courtesy of a 28-yard touchdown pass from Parker Awad to Nico Brown. Awad finished the game completing 14 of 28 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns for Edison.

Awad’s counterpart on the other hand, had no trouble generating offense. Arizona commit Noah Fifita finished the game completing 18 of 26 passes, collecting 293 yards and three touchdowns. A heavy-loaded defensive performance from the Servite Friars was much to blame for the lack of offensive production from the Chargers. The Friars tallied up nine sacks against their Sunset League opponents, Mason Graham led the game with 3 ½ and Jacob Manu followed with 2. Servite’s Ethan Scaffidi would put the finishing touches on a blowout win with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give his team a 54-13 lead with 1:46 left in the third. Servite will prepare to play a home game versus Mission Viejo on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and Edison is set to face Clovis North at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
