Esperanza Hands Fountain Valley Tough Loss (2024)

Fountain Valley’s last-minute efforts were unsuccessful in finding victory against Esperanza. 24-20 was the conclusion to Thursday night’s non league game at Yorba Linda High. The Barons (1-1) had a brief lead with a minute remaining, but a late touchdown pass from Esperanza sealed the win.

Fountain Valley’s Senior quarterback Lucas Alexander led the charge, rushing for a 6-yard touchdown that put the Barons ahead 20-17 with just over a minute left. However, the Aztecs responded quickly, driving down the field and scoring the game-winning touchdown with just six seconds remaining.

Even with the loss, Fountain Valley had its moments. Senior running back Nolan Olivares found light in the second quarter with a 59-yard touchdown run, cutting Esperanza’s lead to 10-7. Alexander also connected with Senior slotback Charles Grover on a big 34-yard pass that helped set up another touchdown, giving the Barons their first lead late in the third quarter.

Fountain Valley’s defense had several key plays, including an interception in the end zone by Grover and a crucial fumble recovery by Joseph Fields in the fourth quarter. Junior defensive end Munir Beshir also blocked an Esperanza punt, setting up the Barons with great field position.

However, the Barons were unable to hold off the Aztecs’ final drive, falling just short of victory. Fountain Valley will look to come out strong when they face former Sunset League rival Marina on Sept. 6 at Westminster High.
