Los Alamitos Falls to Serra, Struggles in 42-7 Loss (2024)
Westminster – Westminster High School Football Field
Los Alamitos faced a tough challenge Friday night, falling 42-7 to Serra in a non-league game at Westminster High. The Griffins (4-2), ranked seventh in Orange County, struggled against Serra’s speed and playmaking on both sides of the ball.
Serra, known for producing future NFL talent, built a commanding 35-0 lead by halftime, with two interception returns for touchdowns and a pair of long touchdown passes from Senior quarterback Jimmy Butler.
Los Alamitos Junior running back Lenny Ibarra provided a bright spot for Los Alamitos, scoring their only touchdown on a 12-yard run early in the second half. “This team is a family,” Ibarra said, reflecting on the resilience of the Griffins, who lost key stars to graduation and transfers in the offseason.
Despite the difficult loss, Los Alamitos coach Ray Fenton praised his team’s grit, saying, “It’s a different group of kids… they have something to prove, and they play that way.”
Los Alamitos struggled to find their usual rhythm on offense, managing just 96 yards rushing and 92 passing. Serra’s defense, led by two interceptions from Junior defensive back Marcellous Ryan, kept Griffins Senior quarterback Alonzo Esparza under pressure throughout the game.
Looking ahead, Los Alamitos will close out its non-league season against Lincoln of San Diego next week. Ibarra remains optimistic, saying, “We’ll bounce this season for sure.”
