Lucas Perez with Two Home Runs as Newport Harbor Overcomes Edison in 10-Inning Sunset League Battle (2025)

Huntington Beach – Freedom Field (EHS)

In a tightly contested Sunset League matchup, Newport Harbor Varsity Baseball outlasted Edison in a 10-inning battle, winning 3-2 thanks to clutch hitting, solid pitching, and late-game resilience.

The Sailors jumped ahead early in the top of the second when Lucas Perez launched a solo home run to left field, giving Newport Harbor a 1-0 lead. The inning continued with a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back pop outs. After a walk put runners on first and second, a fly out ended the top of the inning, stranding both baserunners.

Edison answered back in the bottom of the fifth. Xavier Shoda led off with a single, but the next two batters were retired with a strikeout and a fly out. With two outs, Mason Gerhardt kept the inning alive with a single, followed by a Jordan Alvarez walk to load the bases. Gavin Johnson then came through with a clutch single to left, bringing home Shoda and Gerhardt to give Edison a 2-1 lead. A strikeout ended the inning, but the Chargers had seized momentum.

In the top of the seventh, Lucas Perez brought the Sailors even with a solo shot to center field, tying the game 2-2 with his second home run of the day. But the momentum didn’t carry much further, as Newport Harbor went down after that in three consecutive outs.

The game headed into extra innings tied 2-2, and the deadlock was finally broken in the top of the 10th. Newport Harbor opened with a walk to Jackson Stremick, who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Noah Whittaker. Gavin Guy came through with a clutch single to right, scoring Stremick and giving the Sailors a 3-2 lead.

Offensive Standouts

Lucas Perez powered the Sailors with a pair of home runs and all three RBIs. Gavin Guy added two hits, including the game-winning RBI single in extras. Ryan Williams reached base twice and stole two of them, continuing to be a spark in the offense.

Pitching Notes

The pitching was strong on both sides. Newport Harbor Varsity Sailors pitchers struck out nine, while Edison sat down 10.

Tyler Clark earned the win for Newport, tossing 5 strong innings in relief while allowing just four hits and no earned runs, striking out two. Starter Gavin Guy went five innings, giving up both Edison runs but striking out seven.

For Edison, Noah Hunter struck out eight across seven innings, while reliever Shane Timmons took the loss despite recording two scoreless frames before allowing the go-ahead run.

What’s Next

With this road win, Newport Harbor moves to 4-0 and continues to hold first in Sunset League play as they add onto their momentum. They’ll look to build off this hard-fought victory in their next matchup in this series against Edison. Edison moves to 1-3 in Sunset League play, hoping to rebound after a tough loss against Harbor.
