Marina Destroys Rival Fountain Valley (2024)
Fountain Valley – Fountain Valley Stadium
Marina’s defense dominated Fountain Valley on Friday night, leading the Vikings to a 21-6 win over their Sunset League rival at Fountain Valley. The victory improved Marina’s record to 3-0, thanks to key defensive plays and offensive execution.
Fountain Valley started with a long opening drive but was stopped in its tracks when Marina Senior defensive back Shane Cassidy intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, putting Marina ahead 7-0. “I knew I was locked up on that, we’d been going over it all week – jumping the hitches,” Cassidy said. “I was looking at his eyes,” he explained when asked about reading the pass. Cassidy’s pick-six gave the Vikings the momentum they needed.
Marina’s defense continued to pressure Fountain Valley throughout the game, recording seven sacks led by Senior linebackers Troy Atkins and Duk Caldwell. Fountain Valley Senior quarterback Lucas Alexander struggled to get into a rhythm, as the Vikings’ relentless front seven wrecked the Barons’ offense.
In the second half, Marina Senior quarterback Garrett Hunnicutt connected with Cassie again. Although Fountain Valley fought back with a touchdown pass to Senior slot back Charles Grover, they missed the extra point. Marina’s defense held strong, preventing any further scoring threats.
Senior running back Gabe Carles’ fourth-quarter touchdown sealed the win for Marina, who now moves to 3-0 on the season. Fountain Valley, unable to overcome Marina’s defense, will face Tustin in their next matchup.
