Marina falls to Cypress in CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals (2024)

Cypress – Cypress Gymnasium

The Marina girls volleyball team battled to the end, but saw its season conclude, as Cypress won 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14 on Wednesday at Cypress High School in the CIF-SS Division 3 girls volleyball quarterfinals.

Early in set one, the Vikings appeared determined for a big road win, leading 15-11, After a 5-1 run by the Centurions tied the score at 16-16, Marina eventually took the lead at 21-20, but Cypress rattled off five straight points to take the opening set 25-21.

The Centurions rode the momentum from set one and led 8-4 in set two, as their lead grew to as many as six. But the Vikings’ scrappiness during plays helped them win some crucial points, as they closed the gap to 14-13.

But Marina couldn’t get any closer, as Cypress had an answer every time its lead got down to one. Eventually, the Centurions reestablished a healthy lead and won the second set 25-20.

Cypress got off to a fast start in set three as it led 10-6, but with their backs against the wall and trailing in the set, the Vikings used an 8-1 run to lead 14-11 to force the home team into a time out. Trailing 20-17, the Centurions used a 4-0 run to retake the lead at 21-20, forcing Marina into a time out with their season in the balance.

Down 23-21, the Vikings tied up the score at 23-23 and won the next point off a Cypress hitting error to put them at set point. With the score at 24-24, kills by Brooklyn Enriquez and Korynn Mayo gave Marina set three 26-24, keeping them alive.

After giving up the first point of set four, the Centurions scored seven straight points to lead 7-1 and force the Vikings into a time out. The lead ballooned up to 21-9, as the Centurions closed out the match with a dump kill from the setter.

Mayo led Marina (18-14) with 15 kills and 12 digs while Enriquez and Addision Brown each added 10 kills. Alyssa Enriquez and Cienna Enriquez combined for 40 assists while Rylee Hartwell scooped up 15 digs.

The Vikings’ season came to an end, but have a bright future ahead of them, as they only graduate one senior from their starting lineup. They finished fourth in the always-tough Sunset League and with a majority of their players coming back next season, you can expect a deeper playoff run.
