Marina Sweeps Beaumont, Advances to CIF-SS Quarterfinals (2024)

Huntington Beach – Marina Gymnasium

The Marina girls volleyball team advanced to the CIF-SS quarterfinals with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over Beaumont on Saturday at Marina High School in the CIF-SS Division 3 girls volleyball second round.

The Vikings (18-13) will play at Cypress on Wednesday in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. The Centurions beat St. Margaret’s in four sets.

Korynn Mayo led the Vikings with 19 kills and 16 digs while Brooklyn Enriquez added nine kills. Alyssa Enriquez and Cienna Enriquez paced the offense with 22 and 15 assists respectfully while Rylee Hartwell anchored the defense with 15 digs.

The first set started out being a tight one, but Marina led 18-14 to force a time out from the Cougars. The Vikings lead became 22-17, but three straight points from Beaumont got it within two and forced the home team to call time out.

After Marina scored following a hitting error from the Cougars, the Cougars ripped three straight points again to burn Marina’s last time out and had set point at 24-23. But Mayo helped the Vikings dodge one set point, helped them regain the lead on the next point and eventually saw Kendall Mathison give them the opening set on an overpass kill 27-25.

The second set also started out being close, until Beaumont led 14-11 to force Marina into a timeout. The Vikings responded with a 5-0 run and led until the Cougars tied up at 19-19.

Beaumont took the lead at 20-19, but Marina responded with a 6-0 run capped off by a kill from Brooklyn Enriquez to win the set 25-20.

The Vikings jumped out to an 11-5 to force a time out from Beaumont, which responded with a 7-1 run to tie the score at 12-12. After it was 13-13, the Vikings regained control to lead 16-13 and force the Cougars into their final time out.

Despite rattling off the next two points, that was closest as Beaumont got, as Marina was in control the rest of the way. At 23-21 after the Vikings called time out, two net violations on the Cougars gave the Vikings the set and the match, sending them to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2021.

Marina’s next match is on Wednesday on the road against Cypress at 6 p.m. The Centurions tied for winning the Freeway League with Yorba Linda this season.
