Newport Harbor Breaks Losing Streak over St. Augustine, 28-7 (2024)
Newport Beach – Davidson Field
After a challenging start to the season, the Newport Harbor Sailors finally found their footing on Friday night, securing a decisive 28-7 victory over St. Augustine and breaking a five-game losing streak (dating back to the final game of last season). The win came with a sense of redemption for the Sailors, who avenged a previous loss to St. Augustine in September 2023.
Junior quarterback Jake Meer led the charge for Newport Harbor, delivering an impressive performance by throwing for 218 yards and three touchdowns while completing 84% of his passes. The offense was well-rounded, with Sophomore running back Jackson Stremick contributing both on the ground and in the air, rushing for 71 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 53 receiving yards.
This victory was a much-needed morale boost, bringing their record to 1-4 and preventing a rough stretch of losses. The team’s effort and determination were evident, especially considering the added motivation to make up for last season’s result against the Saints.
Meanwhile, St. Augustine struggled to turn their game around, dropping to 0-5 after suffering their sixth consecutive loss. The Saints had hoped to find some momentum, but Newport Harbor’s disciplined defense and efficient offense were too much to overcome.
Looking ahead, Newport Harbor can savor this win for a while, as they prepare to face Tesoro on October 4th. The team will be eager to carry this newborn confidence into their next matchup. St. Augustine, on the other hand, will return home to take on Mater Dei Catholic this coming Friday, where they hope to end their own losing streak in front of their home crowd.
