Newport Harbor Dominates Marina in Straight Sets, Rebounds from Rivalry Loss (2025)
Newport Beach – Ralph Reed Gymnasium
After a tough loss to Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay, Newport Harbor wasted no time bouncing back. The Sailors controlled the match from start to finish against Marina, securing a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) on Friday night.
It was a familiar outcome between these two squads, as Newport Harbor extended its winning streak over Marina to five straight matches, including a similar 3-0 result in their last meeting in March 2024.
From the first serve, the Sailors (11-5) dictated the pace. Their offensive attack was balanced, and their defense kept Marina from gaining any real momentum. In all three sets, Newport Harbor’s consistency was evident, keeping the Vikings (10-9) between 13 and 16 points per frame.
The loss marked Marina’s fifth straight defeat, a tough stretch for a team that was once 10-4 earlier in the season. Despite flashes of resilience, they struggled to break through against a focused and efficient Newport Harbor squad.
For the Sailors, the win was a much-needed morale booster following their rivalry loss to CdM just two days prior. It also continues a strong stretch where they’ve now won six of their last eight matches, solidifying their standing in the Sunset League.
Both teams now prepare for key road matchups. Newport Harbor will look to carry this momentum into Monday’s game against Edison at 5:45 p.m., while Marina will attempt to snap its losing streak when they take on Los Alamitos on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
With league play heating up, Newport Harbor is proving they have the fight to bounce back—and they did just that in dominant fashion on Friday night.
