Newport Harbor Falls to Edison in Close Sunset League Matchup (2025)

Huntington Beach – Chargers Gym

In a closely contested Sunset League matchup on Wednesday night, the Edison Chargers edged out the Newport Harbor Sailors 52-48 in a game defined by defensive intensity and critical late-game plays. Both teams brought energy to the court, but Edison’s ability to execute in key moments secured their victory.

The first quarter set the tone for a back-and-forth contest, with Edison jumping out to a slight 11-9 lead. Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early, with turnovers and missed opportunities keeping the game within reach for both sides. Newport Harbor’s Jack Berry led his team’s effort, finishing with 19 points, including seven clutch free throws. His performance was pivotal in keeping the Sailors competitive throughout the game.

Edison began to build momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Newport Harbor 15-13. Derick Johnson rose as the Chargers’ offensive leader, contributing 16 points, including two three-pointers that helped Edison stretch their lead. His defensive efforts also stood out, as he recorded six steals, frustrating Newport Harbor’s ballhandlers. By halftime, Edison held a 26-22 advantage, though the game still felt evenly matched.

The third quarter saw Newport Harbor make a strong push. The Sailors managed to outscore the Chargers 16-14 in the period, narrowing the deficit to just two points heading into the final quarter. Edison, however, remained composed, with Connor McNally providing a steady hand and chipping in 12 points, including key baskets that kept the Chargers ahead.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Edison’s defense proved decisive. The Chargers held Newport Harbor to just 10 points in the final period while delivering clutch plays of their own. Devyn Blake’s free throws and timely defensive stops helped Edison preserve their slim lead. The Sailors struggled to capitalize on their possessions late, and despite their best efforts, they couldn’t overcome the Chargers’ defensive pressure.

Rebounding played a critical role in the outcome, with Edison’s Jacob Martin and McNally pulling down key boards to limit Newport Harbor’s second-chance opportunities. Newport Harbor’s Gavin Guy led his team with four offensive rebounds but struggled to convert those chances into points.

With this win, Edison improved to 1-0 in league play, showcasing their resilience in a tightly contested matchup. Newport Harbor, despite the loss, demonstrated they are a team to watch, with Berry and Saukkola providing consistent scoring threats. Both teams will look to build on this game as they continue their Sunset League campaigns.
