Fountain Valley Barons

Newport Harbor Falls to Fountain Valley in a Hard-Fought 63-55 Battle (2024)

Fountain Valley – Baron Gym

The Newport Harbor Sailors faced the Fountain Valley Barons on Friday night in a competitive Sunset League matchup, but ultimately fell short, 63-55, after a fourth-quarter push by the Barons. Both teams showcased moments of brilliance, but Fountain Valley’s standout performances sealed their victory in the closing minutes.

The game began with a tightly contested first quarter. Newport Harbor came out strong, led by Jack Berry’s consistent scoring, topping off Fountain Valley 16-15 in the opening frame. Berry finished the game with 12 points, providing an early offensive spark for the Sailors. However, the Barons quickly found their rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring Newport Harbor 17-15 to take a slim 32-31 lead into halftime.

Fountain Valley’s Devin Payne proved to be the game-changer, dominating on both ends of the court. Payne’s scoring efficiency stood out as he poured in 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting, including four three-pointers. His ability to break through Newport Harbor’s defense, combined with his leadership on the floor, kept the Barons ahead when it mattered most. Aaron DeSantiago added a crucial 18 points for the Barons, providing additional offensive firepower.

Newport Harbor made a strong push in the third quarter, matching Fountain Valley’s output of 16 points to keep the game within reach. Gavin Guy and Owen Saukkola contributed nine points each, with Saukkola’s free throws keeping the Sailors in contention. Niko Salomon also chipped in with 12 points, knocking down two three-pointers to give the Sailors much-needed momentum.

However, Fountain Valley’s composure in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference-maker. The Barons outscored the Sailors 15-8 in the final period, capitalizing on missed opportunities and turnovers by Newport Harbor. Payne and DeSantiago’s scoring down the stretch, coupled with strong rebounding by Kaden Yee and Troy Leach, prevented Newport Harbor from closing the gap.

Turnovers and fouls also hurt Newport Harbor’s chances of mounting a comeback. While the Sailors demonstrated resilience and energy, particularly in the early stages, they couldn’t match Fountain Valley’s execution and defensive intensity in crunch time.

With this win, Fountain Valley improves their standing in league play, while Newport Harbor will look to regroup and bounce back in their next matchup. Despite the loss, the Sailors displayed their potential, with Berry and Saukkola emerging as key players to watch as the season progresses.
