Newport Harbor Holds Off Edison in a Tight 60-57 Victory (2025)
Newport Beach – Sailors Gym
Newport Harbor secured a gritty 60-57 win over Edison on Thursday night, overcoming a second-quarter spike from the Chargers to grind out a close victory. Both teams battled through momentum swings, but Newport Harbor found enough answers late in the game to hold on for the win.
The Sailors came out strong, building a 17-7 lead after the first quarter with efficient offensive execution and defensive pressure. However, Edison responded in the second, putting up 21 points to take control before halftime. Derick Johnson led the Chargers’ offense with a game-high 25 points, aggressively attacking the paint and converting nine free throws. His efforts helped Edison outscore Newport Harbor in the second period, flipping the momentum and giving the Chargers a slight edge heading into the break.
The third quarter saw both teams struggle to find consistent scoring, with Newport Harbor managing just 10 points while Edison added 16 to extend their lead. Jayden Oei provided solid support for the Chargers with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Meanwhile, Newport Harbor relied on balanced scoring, with Jack Berry leading the way with 16 points, while Owen Saukkola added 14 points, knocking down a pair of threes.
The fourth quarter proved decisive as Newport Harbor locked in defensively and outscored Edison 17-13. Dean Davis stepped up in key moments, finishing with 12 points on efficient 5-for-9 shooting. Gavin Guy and Nash McKown also made key contributions, with Guy pulling down ten rebounds to help the Sailors control the glass late in the game. Despite a strong effort from Edison, including big plays from Connor McNally and Jacob Martin, Newport Harbor’s poise in the closing minutes allowed them to escape with a narrow victory.
