Newport Harbor stuns Tesoro for the second straight year, starts Bravo League play 1-0 (2024)
Newport Beach – Davidson Field
For the second year in a row, the Newport Harbor football team went down to the wire with Tesoro. But just like last year, the Sailors had some late-game heroics and key plays, as they beat the Titans 34-31 on Friday at Davidson Field.
Jake Meer, in his second start with Bode Stefano still nursing a back injury, went 14 for 19 and threw for 252 yards one passing touchdown.Meer also added a go-ahead rushing touchdown with 1:15 in the fourth quarter to put the Sailors up for good.
Cash O’Byrne, who missed the Titans’ last game against Cypress due to a bruised right shoulder following their game against La Serna, went 18 for 33 and threw for 241 passing yards and two touchdowns. O’Byrne’s favorite targets were Campbell Schamel and Tanner Silber who had 81 and 79 receiving yards, respectively.
After a scoreless first quarter, Tesoro scored first off a 25-yard field goal from Kayden Cross to go up 3-0. Newport Harbor got a big 75-yard kickoff return from the Sailors’ five-yard line which put the team in prime position. But on a 4th and 15, Meer threw the ball into the endzone for an interception, which was most likely going to be designed as an arm punt, but was returned for a 103-yard pick six. Later in the quarter, the Titans added another touchdown from Nic Brubak.
