Newport Harbor Beats Out Capistrano Valley in Absolute Dog Fight

San Juan Capistrano – Capistrano Valley HS

The drive was déjà vu from last week as the Sailors traveled for their fourth straight road game. This game only two miles from their game last Friday night (vs. JSerra). However, the game itself went from “déjà vu” to “opposite day” as instead of being down 21-0 at half (last week) with nothing working yet, they were up 21-3 at half and much in control.

Not much could have better for Coach Lofthouse and the Sailors in the first half. They found themselves up 21-3 and in complete control.

After exchanging a few punts, the offensive only needed 3 plays to go 84 years as senior QB Colton Joseph hit senior WR Kashton Henjum with a pass of 53-yard, followed by a run from senior Peyton Irving 16 yards and then again back to Kashton for a 16-yard touchdown. The PAT from junior kicker Jon Richardson was good and the Sailors took a a first quarter 7-0 lead.

Henjum was not done, yet. After an interception by senior CB Garrett Emerison, Joseph connected with Henjum for 32-yards and the duo’s second touchdown of the night. Henjum still was not done – he would score yet his third TD in the 4th quarter (a 51-yard grab) to end the game with over 210 yards and three TDs. An amazing performance and it will probably get “top honors” for receivers this week (we’ll see as the data/stats come in).

It was the second half, however, when opposite day continued for the Sailors.

If you remember last week vs. JSerra, the Sailors came roaring back from a 21-0 deficit to tie the game (but eventually lost). Last night it was the spirited Capo Valley Cougars who seemed to get a spark from the rain and the engaged homecoming crowed to stage their own comeback.

But the Sailors prevailed in the end, and took home a well-fought 28-25 victory.
