Oilers End Non-League Play With Win Over Marina (2021)

Huntington Beach – ‘Cap’ Sheue Field

Huntington Beach scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in route to a 45-13 win over Marina on Thursday in a non-league game at Sheue Field.

Marina didn’t have an answer for Oilers senior quarterback AJ Perez, who finished 10-of-19 for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Perez added a rushing touchdown as well.

“I think we can play smarter,” Huntington Beach head coach Brett Brown said. “Too many penalties. I don’t know if all of them are really penalties but we have to be better. We have to clean that up but our effort was great and our attitude and energy was awesome.”

The Oilers scored on its opening drive with a 30-yard touchdown run by Perez. Tyler Moses gave the Oilers a 12-0 lead in the first quarter when he scored on a 37-yard fake-punt run. Hideo Ray was tackled short of the goal line on the two-point conversion.

Oilers junior wide receiver AJ Vandermade hauled in a 34-yard touchdown to give HB an 18-0 lead in the second quarter. Perez extended the lead with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Castro.

Marina got on the board with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brock Beaver to Bo Green. On the next drive, Perez connected with Ray for a 70-yard touchdown to give the Oilers a 31-7 lead right before halftime.

Huntington Beach opened the third quarter with a 9-play, 69-yard drive that was capped by a 25-yard touchdown run from EJ Riederich. Junior linebacker Nathan Tauanuu scored his second touchdown of the season when he scooped up a fumble and returned it 26-yards for a 45-7 lead.

“I was supposed to blitz and the running back came up and fumbled the ball,” Tauanuu said. “I grabbed it, I thought the play was dead but then my friend AJ pushed me in my back and I kept running and I got that touchdown.”

Huntington Beach has a bye next week. They will open Sunset League play Oct. 1st against Fountain Valley.
