San Juan Hills Survives Corona del Mar to Win Season Opener (2024)
San Juan Capistrano – Badlands Field
Corona del Mar created a hopeful second-half comeback in their Bravo League opener against San Juan Hills but fell just short in a 31-28 defeat.
After being shut out in the first half and trailing 17-0, the Sea Kings came alive after halftime. Junior quarterback Brady Annett led a 67-yard drive, capping it with a 5-yard touchdown run to put Corona del Mar on the board. San Juan Hills answered with a touchdown of their own, but Annett fired back with a 4-yard pass to Junior wide receiver James Garrett, cutting the lead to 10.
Momentum shifted when Senior linebacker Breck Clemmer forced a fumble on San Juan Hills quarterback Timmy Herr, allowing defensive tackle Junior Damien Zeno-Herrera to scoop up the loose ball and return it 25 yards for a touchdown, bringing the Sea Kings within three points.
With just under nine minutes left, Corona del Mar had possession, but a critical fumble caused by San Juan Hills’ Chris Williams was recovered by Greg Blomdahl, leading to an 11-yard touchdown run by Elijah Ayala. Annett responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Senior wide receiver Emori Davis, but with only 56 seconds left, the Stallions recovered the onside kick to secure the win.
