Villa Park Reclaims Victory Over Newport Harbor, 46-21 (2024)
Villa Park – Fred Kelly Stadium
Coming fresh out of a blowout, the Spartans promptly went back to work for the win over Newport Harbor.
Izn the opening minutes of the game Spartans’ running back Finlay Reyes draws first blood with a 3-yard rush for a touchdown, and a 2-point conversion (8-0). On the Spartans’ next drive, quarterback Nate Lewis keeps it on the ground and rushes 20 yards for a touchdown, another successful 2-point conversion attempt makes it (16-0).
By the middle of the second quarter, Villa Park was up 37-0, a perfect chance as any for the Sailors to get some points on the board. Sailors’ Sophomore Matthew Yamakawa breathed life into the home team with a touchdown run, with an extra point making it (37-7). The Spartans return with a 40+ yard field goal expanding the lead to (40-7) to close out the half.
Newport Harbor comes out more determined defensively in the third quarter not allowing any scoring in the third quarter. Stopping the run game and putting more pressure on the receivers, the Sailors found enough momentum to score at the top of the fourth (40-14). In the last six minutes of the game, the Spartans managed one more rushing touchdown but missed the extra point cementing them at 46 to close out the game. For the Sailors, quarterback Sammy Stremick breaks free for another touchdown run bumping them up to 21 after the extra point. Villa Park turns off the lights at 46-21, moving their record to 7-3 and the Sailors down to 3-7.
