Corona del Mar Sea Kings Fall 2021 Football Season Preview
Head Coach: Dan O’Shea
Dan O’Shea arrived at Corona del Mar in 2011 (from Trabuco Hills High School) as defensive coordinator and took over as head coach in 2015. Since then the Sea Kings have built a culture around a “unified approach to football in an era of a selfish society.” Such a culture starts when interviewing Coach O’Shea as he immediately inserts that Offensive Coordinator Kevin Hettig shares head coaching duties (as associate head coach). O’Shea guides the defense. Hettig guides the offense.
Corona del Mar football made California football news in 2019 when they went a perfect 16-0 and brought a state championship home to Eastbluff. Another noteworthy fact about CdM is the locker room has two ex-NFL players on the roster (OL coach Sam Baker and Safeties coach Chris Conte).

Can’t Miss Games:
Battle of the Bay 10/22/21 Corona del Mar vs. Newport Harbor (Davidson Field at Newport Harbor High School)
The Sea Kings haven’t lost the Battle of the Bay since 2012. That eight consecutive wins ties the longest win streak in the rivalry’s 59-year history when Newport ran off eight straight in the 1970s. Last season the Sea Kings won 10-7, the closest Battle of the Bay since Peter Lofthouse took over as head coach at Newport Harbor. Expect a fierce battle, as always, in one of the best high school football rivalry games in the state. Coach Dan O’Shea explains, “Everything starts with Battle of the Bay. That sets the tone for 365 days of the year.
10/15/21 Corona del Mar vs. Edison (Sheue Field at Huntington Beach High School)
Corona del Mar will seek revenge for last season’s five-OT 44-41 loss to the Chargers on October 15th and if it’s anything remotely like the last meeting, it promises to be a barn burner. CdM junior QB David Rasor (returning starter) said that the Sea Kings gained a ton of experience in that game and it will be fun to watch these two upper echelon Sunset League teams go at it again.
Outlook:
The shortened 6-game COVID/Spring year for CdM was one coming off a perfect 16-0 state championship season. There were questions about whether or not O’Shea and Hettig’s Sea Kings would be in a rebuilding year. Corona del Mar did not need to rebuild, they simply reloaded and ended the season with only two blemishes on their record. The Sea Kings look to continue that momentum after getting junior QB/RB duo David Rasor and Evan Sanders crucial experience over the spring’s six games. Dan O’Shea has built a selfless championship culture at Corona del Mar High School so even though there are big questions to be answered (namely, replacing five senior offensive line starters), few teams win as consistently as CdM. Look for senior captain Charlie Mannon, who Coach O’Shea calls a “superhero human” to do a little bit of everything on the gridiron for the Sea Kings this season.
